How is it I got more normal and everything else got weirder?

—Quinn in Light

Quinn Gaither is a character appearing in all the books set in the FAYZ, prior to which he is Sam Temple's only friend. However, as jealousy and resentment arise due to Sam's emerging powers, Quinn grows distant from him and ultimately betrays his friend to Caine Soren and his crew.

Despite his betrayal, Quinn redeems himself by saving Sam's life and earns acceptance back into the community of Perdido Beach. Determined to make amends and contribute to the survival of the FAYZ, Quinn takes a leadership role and establishes the fishermen group. Together with his fellow fishermen, he plays a vital role in securing food resources for the community.

Throughout the series, Quinn's character undergoes significant growth and transformation, evolving from a friend overshadowed by jealousy to a valuable and trusted member of the community. After the barrier finally vanishes, Quinn chooses to reside in Santa Monica, living in proximity to Sam and Astrid.

Description and Personality[]

Quinn is a laid-back and easygoing individual, known for his calm demeanor and sense of humor. At the beginning of the series, Gone, his initial reaction to the FAYZ is marked by negative emotions such as jealousy, fear, and stress. These feelings cause Quinn to struggle in navigating the tense and uncertain situations that arise. Quinn's behavior also includes making racist remarks towards Edilio. These comments reflect a lack of understanding and sensitivity towards cultural differences, showcasing a negative aspect of Quinn's character during this period.

Before the FAYZ, Quinn had a distinct style, often seen sporting sunglasses and donning fedoras, adding a touch of flair to his laid-back persona.

With his tall stature, he possesses a noticeable presence, and his black hair drapes over his eyes, adding a touch of mystery to his appearance. Quinn's sun-kissed skin and muscular physique are a result of his frequent rowing activities, which contribute to his exceptional fishing skills.

Appearances[]

Gone

In Gone, Quinn holds a significant role as Sam's closest friend and trusted confidant. After all the adults vanish Quinn, Sam and Astrid Ellison begin searching for their parents. Quinn reacts negatively to this and Sam tries to reassure him. Finding nothing, they go to the town square where Sam tries to save a girl from a burning building but fails because she attacks him with her power (shooting fire out of her hands). After this Quinn, Sam and Astrid search for Little Pete, initially arriving at Clifftop and learning about the FAYZ Barrier they then meet Edilio Escobar and continue the search. When the group are driving a golf cart to the Nuclear Power Plant. They are intercepted by Orc's crew and Quinn gets beaten on, he laments this to the group and doesn't understand why he got beat. The group continues and they eventually find Little Pete at the Nuclear Power Plant. They decide to spend the night there and Quinn wakes up in the middle of the night to find Little Pete telekinetically strangling Sam. They leave the power plant and Edilio confronts Sam and Astrid and Quinn learns about the power.

After Caine, Diana and Drake as well as his crew take over the town, Sam is put in charge of the firehouse where both Quinn and Edilio also live and work as firefighters. At this point, Quinn is unnerved by the powers on display and jealousy causes him to betray Sam to Caine and his Crew. Quinn's actions involve revealing critical information about Sam's power and other important details to Caine. Quinn does end up saving Sam after he was kidnapped and alongside Sam, Astrid, Pete and Edilio they escape town. The group manages to get into Hermit Jim's shack and they meet with Lana. Quinn witness Sam's power as he fights back the coyote's circling the shack.

Throughout this point, Quinn is quiet and plays a background role but follows the group to Coates Academy when they are kidnapped by Drake, then he escapes with the survivors and makes his way back to Perdidio Beach where he is trained on how to shoot with a gun so he can protect the preschool during the Thanksgiving Battle. During the battle, Quinn has a few chances to shoot Drake Merwin but he cannot bring himself to do it. Sam reassures him that it's ok he didn't. As the Coyote's attack the children in the square, Quinn's thoughts, stress and emotions reach a boiling point and he opens fire on the coyotes and shoots with reckless abandon into the crowd.

After the battle, Quinn is seen at the Thanksgiving dinner, set up by Albert, alongside Lana and Edilio. Sam asks Quinn to look after Little Pete whilst Astrid and him go to the beach to which he responds "No prob, brah.".

Hunger

In Hunger, Quinn reveals that he sort of has a crush on Lana and dances with her at the McClub. He becomes important in the FAYZ community when he starts fishing casually. Quinn discovers Sam whipped by Drake nearly to death after the nuclear power plant battle and helps get him to the mineshaft in the hope of finding Lana to heal him before he dies from his injuries.

Lies

Quinn continues developing his fishing expertise and, with some help from Albert and his entrepreneurship, begins developing a fishing crew that greatly helps the FAYZ community avoid total starvation.

Plague

Quinn now effectively directs a full fishing crew and develops a strong rapport with Albert. He becomes one of the more wealthy FAYZ residents by way of his trade skill. Quin is called upon to locate and notify Caine of the bugs threatening to invade Perdido Beach in the hopes of Caine helping fight them off.

Fear

At the start of Fear, Quinn and his crews are fishing quite normally but Cigar is taken to Caine because he killed Jaden with a studded table leg. He is sentenced to a full day with Penny. By the end of the day, he gouged his own eyes out. This enrages Quinn and his fishing crews, so they go on strike until Caine banishes Penny.

When the barrier goes dark, he is put in charge by Lana. A few of his fishermen try to help Caine, whose hands have been cemented. Caine's dignity is seriously damaged and he breaks most of the bones in his hands. Lana heals them. When Penny, Diana, Gaia and Drake come from the mineshaft, Quinn helps them try to kill Drake and Penny and is responsible for making Caine fight, by telling him that if he doesn't do something quickly then all anyone will remember him for is being held at the mercy of Penny. They end up killing Penny but Diana, Gaia and Drake go back to the mineshaft and the barrier lightens up. This time, it isn't opaque but clear.

Light

Quinn is sent by Edilio to get Albert from San Francisco de Sales Island. Albert then tells Quinn to stop fishing, forcing everyone to get back to work (having been distracted by limited contact with the outside world when the FAYZ wall becomes clear). Through Taylor, Quinn is the first person Sam sends for when he is hurt by Gaia on the highway. After the FAYZ wall comes down, Quinn moves to Santa Monica and helps Sam escape from the hospital.

After the FAYZ

After the events of Light, Quinn goes to Community College and gets a job as a deckhand on a sportfishing boat in San Pedro.

Relationships[]

Sam Temple

Prior to the FAYZ, Sam is Quinn's best and arguably only friend. They surf together frequently. After the FAYZ wall appears and relationships within the FAYZ evolve (especially after the events in Gone), Sam and Quinn grow distant and redefine their relationship as more acquaintance or casual than close. Quinn and Sam's relationship stays healthy/positive throughout the series. Although Quinn stayed in Perdido Beach during the Big Split, Sam doesn't hold it against him as he understands Quinn has become "the fisherman" and belongs on the ocean (and thereby near Perdido Beach).

Lana Arwen Lazar

Quinn develops a crush on Lana but it never evolves to anything more. Lana comes to greatly respect and trust Quinn as she sees his dramatic change in character throughout the series of events that unfold inside the FAYZ.

Albert Hillsborough

Albert and Quinn work together after Quinn develops a knack for fishing and Albert sees Quinn's efforts as a business opportunity. Quinn and Albert carry a good professional rapport and together quickly become critical in making sure the FAYZ residents don't starve.

Cigar (Bradley)

Cigar is one of Quinn's best fishing crew members and develops a good friendship with Quinn as the fishing efforts become more and more critical to the survival of the FAYZ residents. Quinn and his crew go on strike in response to Cigar's torture at the hands of Penny and Quinn affirms that, despite all that happens to Cigar, they will always be good friends.

Caine Soren

Quinn and Caine began as enemies because of Quinn's early alliance with Sam but as the series progresses, Quinn and Caine become neutral towards each other as Quinn's alliance with Sam fades and Caine realizes Quinn and his fishing crew are essential to keeping the FAYZ residents fed.
