The first poof was at the beginning of the series in Gone. Sam is in class with his friends when all of a sudden...POOF!, goes the teacher and every one 15 and over. It isn't until two girls hit their fifteenth birthday that they poof that Sam and Astrid figure out that 15 is the cut off age in the FAYZ. When Caine finds out he makes it his job to "beat" the big poof.
