It was wrong to murder even before Moses brought down the commandments. Right and wrong doesn't come from God. It’s inside us. And we know it. And even if God appears right in front of us, and tells us to our faces to murder, it’s still wrong.

—Astrid to Brittney

Astrid Ellison is a main character appearing in all the original books, plus Villain and Hero. Astrid is portrayed as highly intelligent, resourceful, and analytical. Her intelligence and logical thinking help her make rational decisions and analyze the complexities of the situation they find themselves in. She is widely recognized as the smartest person within the FAYZ. Prior to the manifestation of the barrier, Astrid had already earned her nickname 'Astrid the Genius' due to her exceptional intelligence and academic achievements as an honor student.

Astrid is also the older sister of Peter "Little Pete" Ellison, Astrid assumes the role of caretaker for him throughout the series. This responsibility takes a constant toll on Astrid. Throughout the series, Astrid maintains an ongoing relationship with Sam Temple, the protagonist of the series. She is the one who urges Sam to assume leadership over the group of children left to survive in the FAYZ.

Their connection endures even after the barrier falls, and their relationship plays an important role in the series.

Description and Personality[]

Astrid Ellison is 14 to 15 years old in the original books, and 19 in the Monster Trilogy. Astrid is described as both beautiful and intelligent by numerous characters. She has shoulder-length silky blonde hair, bright blue eyes, rosy cheeks, and pale, translucent skin.

Her birthday is March 14. Her favourite color is yellow, symbolising the sun and her faith in God. Along with her intellect she also has some slight manipulative tendencies and impatience.

Notably, Astrid is highly intelligent and has a penchant for numbers and employing complex vocabulary. Her verbal skills and sharp wit make her prefer to engage in verbal confrontation rather than relying on physical confrontations.

Power and abilities[]

In the initial book, Gone, Astrid possesses the unique ability to gauge the future importance of individuals in the FAYZ by holding their hand. This ability later evolves into a visual perception, similar to seeing stars in the sky. However, the author, Michael Grant, changed his mind on this power, and it is not mentioned again until the book Villain, where Astrid reveals her classification as an Original Child of the Rock—a designation for individuals with powers in the FAYZ. Subsequently, in the book Hero, it is clarified that Astrid never possessed a power but believed she did.

In Hero, Astrid's ability to morph provides her with super strength and impenetrable skin, enhancing her physical capabilities. She demonstrates proficiency with a shotgun and, similar to Hunter, possesses various survival skills. Additionally, Astrid is known for her intelligence and resourcefulness, leveraging her intellect to her advantage. When engaged in combat, she is not averse to fighting dirty.

Appearances[]

Gone

Astrid Ellison also known as "Astrid The Genius", first appears in Gone. Alongside Sam, Quinn, and eventually Edilio, they search for her younger brother, Little Pete, shortly after the appearance of the FAYZ barrier. Their search takes them from Perdido Beach to Clifftop Hotel, where her mother played tennis, and eventually to the Nuclear Power Plant, where her father worked. Here they reunite with Little Pete before returning to the Town Plaza. Astrid reveals her awareness of Little Pete's powers to the group.

Quinn's betrayal of Sam leads to Astrid being captured and tortured by Drake, forced to insult Little Pete. Little Pete teleports Astrid back to her room and saves her from Drake. Filled with shame and guilt from insulting Little Pete, she knows she needs to escape to hide. She decides to seek refuge at Clifftop Hotel. Drake manages to find Astrid here and chases her through the hotel with the intention to kill her. She is luckily saved in time by Sam.

Sam and Astrid fall in love towards the middle of Gone. Later in the book, Sam's group, including Lana Arwen Lazar, are captured by Caine's Crew at Coates Academy, where Caine plans to encase their hands in cinder blocks as to block their powers, regardless of if they have them or not. Astrid's quick thinking leads her to try to break Pete's gameboy to ilicit a reaction. Luckily, Pete makes all the cinderblocks disappear which gives Sam time to burn Drake's arm off and for the group and survivors to escape.

Back at Perdido Beach, Astrid takes stock of the survivors from Coates Academy and is seen talking with them to learn their powers and abilities. Later, Sam asks to speak with Astrid in private. He sent Edilio to the power plant to recover guns for the impending Thanksgiving Battle and he came back with security footage. Sam shows the footage to Astrid, revealing that Pete had created the FAYZ in order to prevent the power plant from going into meltdown. Astrid is initially very tearful and upset, apologising for Pete but Sam reassures her that Pete saved lives and stopped the meltdown.

During the Thanksgiving Battle, Astrid (and Pete) is instructed to hide in the top of the church to act as a lookout for Sam. Caine destroys the Church and Astrid and Pete are both trapped until Dekka uses her gravitational powers to save her. Later in the fight, Caine runs into Astrid and uses her to threaten Sam. Sam is victorious and Astrid is saved. At the end of the book, Sam and Astrid head to the beach for some alone time.

Hunger

She is often the voice of reason when it comes to those with power, and most people believe her to be a "normal," due to the fact that her power is not displayed like Sam or Brianna's power, and does not use her power after Gone. She dissects the first Zeke and is the one to suggest negotiating with them. It is also revealed that she has been keeping a record of all mutations in the FAYZ.

She tries to break up the anti-freak mob that Zil put together because of Hunter, but ends up with a black eye instead. At the end of Hunger, she is still with Sam. Zil Sperry tries to hang her along with Hunter, but Orc saves them.

Lies

Astrid addressing the town council in the UK trailer for Lies

At the beginning of Lies, we find out about the Temporary Council and that she holds a major position in it. John lies to Mary for the first time, sending her into a breakdown that leads her to taking the Poof and trying to bring the children with her. Astrid, Dekka, and Brianna save most of them, Dekka being the main reason they were saved. During the fire, she learns how hard Sam's job is.

Throughout the book, Astrid and Sam begin to argue because Sam is hiding things from her. The arguments lead to Sam moving out of the house. However, it is not mentioned that the two break up.

Like everyone else in the book, she is terrified of Drake and what he means. Her relationship with Sam, by the end of this book, is questionable.

Plague
Pete's cloud

Astrid looking up at Pete's cloud

Astrid officially breaks up with Sam at the beginning of the book, because Sam becomes drunk and depressed and kisses Taylor (although he has no feelings for Taylor). When Little Pete creates his cloud, she takes him to Coates with the help of Orc who intends to commit suicide by overdosing on Howard’s cabka. There, she throws Little Pete out of a window to the bugs thinking that it will end the FAYZ, which it does not. At the end of Plague, her location is unknown after she is overwhelmed with guilt. Her current side is supposedly Sam's, but this is unclear because at the end of Plague she doesn't go to the lake with Sam, but is rumored to be living by herself. It is apparent that the two never made up.

Fear
Astrid Fear trailer

Astrid in the woods

In Fear, Astrid is on her own in the woods quite close to Lake Tramonto. Astrid's blonde hair is bluntly cut and she gets a tan. Her resolve of her religious beliefs become skewered and she battles the struggles. After she sees the barrier growing dark she tells herself to go the Lake Tramonto to tell them about the barrier, but she really wants to see Sam. When she gets there, she finds out that Sam is not there but is on a little job. She waits for him in his bunk and realizes that he missed her so much that he slept with her nightgown. He returns, and they sleep together. They both realize that they love each other and that they can't fight anymore.

She then tries to read how fast the barrier is growing dark. She realizes that it is growing at a faster rate each day. She then decides to take the message for Sam to set up Sammy Suns in Perdido Beach and doesn't tell Sam. She gradually gets lost and bumps into Cigar. He tells her that she can see Little Pete and she communicates to him through Cigar.

Light

In Light, Astrid and Sam have reconciled and are in love. She makes him promise that he will stay alive and they will walk out of the FAYZ together. She stays at the lake until Gaia destroys it. In order to end all of the killing caused by Gaia and protect, she asks Petey to possess her, but he refuses because he doesn't trust her.

Light trailer - Astrid

Astrid being choked by Drake

She is kidnapped by Drake and is hurt by him but escapes by biting his nose and pushing her thumbs into his eyes. When the FAYZ falls, she is taken to a different hospital than Sam but is with Diana and Lana. Astrid gets a book and movie deal and lives with Sam and Diana in LA with the words to her boyfriend Sam.

Monster

In Monster Dekka briefly tells the government that Astrid "has her head on straight". She gets mentioned a couple of times as the "Ellison girl" who wrote the FAYZ books. Dekka mentions that Astrid and Sam are still living together, but Diana moved out a few years back.

Villain

It is mentioned that Astrid is now married to Sam. The two are getting most of their income from the book Astrid wrote about the FAYZ. She and Sam house Dekka and Armo at the beginning of the book, and Dekka informs Astrid that Drake is still alive, and most likely coming after her. She decides that she needs a morph to protect herself against him, and she doesn’t want Sam having a morph as she decides he doesn’t need to go through what he did in the FAYZ a second time.

Hero

In Hero she is said to be just as beautiful as ever. Her new morph allows her to overpower Drake and incapacitate him. She is also immune to Drake's whip and believes her skin to be impenetrable.

Relationships[]

Sam Temple

Sam and Astrid date throughout the Gone series. Despite facing challenges along the way, their bond remains strong. In Lies, they assume a parental role, caring for the children in the FAYZ, and their kisses, while described as "gross," provide a sense of reassurance. In Light, Astrid emphasizes the importance of their survival and vows to leave the FAYZ together. While they have their fair share of arguments, by the time Light unfolds, they have come to realize their deep love for each other and commit to staying together.

After the FAYZ ends, Sam and Astrid choose to live together in a house. They extend an invitation to Diana to join them, but she ultimately decides to move out before the events of Monster. Additionally, Sam and Astrid solidify their commitment to each other by getting married, as revealed in Villain.

Little Pete

Astrid Ellison has a challenging relationship with her severely autistic younger brother, Little Pete, who is five years old. Despite her deep love for him, she sometimes struggles to handle his behavior. In Gone, it is clear that Astrid harbours some resentment in being a "mother at 14" for Little Pete. In Hunger, Little Pete begins experiencing peculiar dreams that manifest into real-life threats, putting both Sam and Astrid in danger. These unsettling dreams are fuelled by the malevolent entity known as the Gaiaphage.

In Plague, Astrid reaches a breaking point and makes a desperate decision. She throws Little Pete to the bugs, hoping that by eliminating him, the FAYZ itself will disappear. However, even though Little Pete vanishes and the bugs dissipate, the FAYZ remains intact. Astrid is left consumed by heartbreak and overwhelming guilt for her actions. Nevertheless, in Fear, Astrid experiences a sense of joy and relief when Little Pete unexpectedly returns, even though she is unable to physically see him. She recognizes his power and believes that he holds the key to ending the FAYZ.

Astrid's relationship with Little Pete is a constant source of emotional turmoil for her. Despite the difficulties they face, Astrid's love for her brother remains constant, and she holds onto hope that he possesses the ability to bring an end to the FAYZ.

Quinn Gaither

At the onset of the FAYZ, Astrid describes Quinn as a "spineless worm," suggesting a lack of resilience and fortitude. However, as the events unfold through the series, Quinn undergoes a transformation, emerging as a pillar of strength and resilience. Astrid acknowledges his positive development, recognizing Quinn as one of the individuals who experienced significant personal growth within the confines of the FAYZ.

Orc

Astrid had served as Orc's tutor prior to the FAYZ. Their interactions were characterized by her helpfulness towards him, often addressing him by his given name, Charles. Orc, in turn, takes on a protective role for Astrid, shielding her from the Human Crew's threats. This protective dynamic continues when Astrid relocates to Coates Academy. As Astrid experiences a crisis of faith following the apparent loss of her brother, Orc undergoes a transformative spiritual journey. While Astrid no longer believes in God, she recognizes that Orc's newfound faith has contributed to his personal growth and positive changes. Despite their differing beliefs, Astrid maintains a level of respect for the role that religion plays in Orc's life.

During their interactions, Astrid confides in Orc about her secret hideaway, where she resides for a few months. In Light, Orc attempts to locate this hiding place based on Astrid's description, remembering her mention of berries and his tolerance for thorns, as he recognizes that berries would serve as a valuable food source.

Notes[]

  • Astrid's avatar, as seen by Cigar, closely resembles Uriel, the Angel of Repentance. This may be intended, as Astrid constantly seeks repentance and eventually believes she has found it.
  • Astrid watches heart surgery on TV.
  • As described by Michael Grant, Astrid kissed Sam 15 times in the Gone Series.
